Executive Summary
A sequence can look reasonable on paper until someone measures the travel between events. Distance alone does not account for the route available at the time, installation gates, traffic, parking, security screening, walking, elevators, weather, or transportation method. This publication explains how investigators test whether a real person could move between supported locations in the time available.
Travel analysis converts a written chronology into a real-world movement test. Investigators should establish the best-supported start and end points, reconstruct historical conditions when possible, account for transition delays, test more than one reasonable route, and anchor estimates with records such as video, access data, calls, photographs, receipts, or witnesses. Mapping results are estimates and their assumptions should be stated clearly.
A timeline is incomplete until the investigator tests whether a real person could move between the locations in the available time.
